JOINING IBEW LOCAL 45

Joining the IBEW and Local 45 is simple. You must be working in an IBEW jurisdiction and have completed a membership application packet. You will be required to pay an initiation fee upon submission of your packet and it is required that you submit the packet and the fees required within 30 days of working in an IBEW jurisdiction. To obtain an IBEW Local 45 Membership Application packet, please call the union office at 323-851-5515 or contact and shop steward.

Once you've completed the membership process, you will be reqired to pay dues to the union as long as you are working in an IBEW jurisdiction. If you are no longer employed by a shop under the IBEW jurisdiction, you can fill out an Honorary Withdrawal Form which suspends your "active" membership in the union.

Welcome to IBEW Local 45. Here is some information on how our dues system works...

BASE DUES
Base Dues are $12.00 per month as outlined on page 6 in the IBEW constitution.

WORKING DUES
Working Dues are 1.25% of base earnings (or required minimum union dues). However, your Working Dues will change anytime there is an increase in your base earnings.

PAYMENT DUE DATE

As a Non-Staff, Casual or Temporary employee, you should be paying dues for the previous month by the 15th days of the current month. For example: Union dues owed for the month of May 2001 are due on or before the 15th day of June 2001.

As a Staff employee not on automatic dues deduction, all union dues owed are due on or before the 15th day of the current month. For example: union dues for the month of June 2001 are due on of before June 15, 2001.

We have assembled a Dues Payment Packet which is available online in the Adobe PDF Format. This packet containts complete instructions and a worksheet calculate the amount you owe.

LATE FEES
If your account is past due (3 or more months in arrears) you will be assessed a late fee of $28.00. Be advised that Local 45 sends statements as a courtesy and no member is entitled to notice of monthly dues or arrearages. Please call the local 45 office at (323) 851-5515 or (800) 332-2983 to request a payment arrangement if you cannot remit all union dues owed.

DROPPED MEMBERSHIP
If your membership is dropped for non-payment of required union dues, you will have to re-join Local Union 45 (re-pay the initiation and administrative service fees) and you will not be eligible for work within Local 45's jurisdiction until you are again a member in good standing. Be advised that your membership will be dropped automatically if your account become 6 or more months in arrears.

ABOUT DUES, BILLING, RECEIPTS & STATEMENTS
Why doesn't the union just send me a bill? This is one of the most frequently asked questions of the local. With thousands of members nationwide, the cost for administering a billing system would be tremendous. The IBEW and most contracts state that ...

"It is the obligation of the member to pay his or her monthly base and working dues."

For the convenience of our members, we have assembled a Dues Payment Packet which is available online and it will help you calculate the amount you owe.

Receipts for dues (those little yellow forms) will be sent to members throughout the year for members records and income tax purposes. If you do not receive one, please make sure your mailing address is correct with the local or call the office immediately.

If you would like a statement of your account to resolve a past due dues issue, please call the local 45 office at (323) 851-5515 or (800) 332-2983 to make a request.

AUTOMATIC DUES DEDUCTIONS
Some employers offer the convenience of deducting union dues via payroll. Please contact your employer to see if this service is available. An authorization form must be completed and provided to both the Local Union and your Employer before the dues deductions can begin. Forms may be obtained from the local office or by using our Automatic Dues Deduction Request form.

HONORARY WITHDRAWAL
If you will not be working in Local 45's jurisdiction for 2 or more months and your union dues are current, you should request an Honorary Withdrawal. Honorary Withdrawal requests must be submitting in writing. You can use our Membership Activity Form to request an Honorary Withdrawal. Once you Honorary Withdrawal request has been granted, you will not be liable for any monthly union dues until you are hired for work in Local 45's jurisdiction. Confirmation of your request will be sent to you within 30 days. Honorary Withdrawal status protects your IBEW membership therefore you are not required to rejoin or re-submit initiation and administrative service fees if and when you resume employment in Local 45 jurisdiction.

RETURN FROM HONORARY WITHDRAWAL
You must notify Local 45 when you are hired and reactivate your membership by remitting $30 immediately upon your return to work by sending a letter of filling out our Return From Honorary Withdrawal Form.

Upon completion of your work in an IBEW 45 jurisdiction, you may resume Honorary Withdrawal status by submitting another written request to Local 45.
